Part of influencing a new thinking about economics, envisioning the strategic steps to reach implementation, and developing effective programs on the ground, is having a well-organized and accessible body of fundamental research.
In order to make the resources of the collection accessible in multiple ways to influence the public and engage both academics and activists, the E. F. Schumacher is undertaking a 1.5 million dollar Campaign to:
1. Complete Renovation and Expansion of Library Building
Includes limited renovation of the existing 2,000 square feet of library/office space; and completion of an additional 1,600 square feet on the first floor level of the building, including new book shelving, archival storage area, and supply space; humidity and light control; efficient librarian work space; research/meeting rooms; enhanced media and internet capabilities; handicapped accessibility; expanded bathroom and kitchen area.

2. Hire Library Staff to Support Current and Expanded Holdings
Includes two years salary for one skilled Librarian and one Archivist/Conservationist. Among staff responsibilities will be:
• To maintain current collection and add new holdings
• To make available for the first time Schumacher’s important unpublished writings and other archival holdings in the collection
• To host visiting researchers
• To create annotated reading lists and curricula on topics of current concern

3. Hire a Communications Director/ Head of Resource Development and Outreach
To effectively bring key literature in the field of a new economics to a broader audience, our intention is to hire a strong, visionary and well-connected spokesperson to oversee the following:
• Networking and developing relationships/partnerships with select academic institutions, think-tanks, and other influential organizations
• Coordinating efforts of staff, board, and advisory board in reaching out to media through Letters to the Editor, Op Ed pieces, press releases, and personal connections
• Development of an expanded and pro-active resource web presence including posting select archival documents and videos online for reference
• Solicitation and circulation of new papers that address contemporary challenges and suggest solutions
• Development of educational packets for academics, the press, and citizen discussion groups
• Convening conferences on site and online using the resources of the Library

4. Expand Library Programs & Outreach
Includes development of special exhibits and the use of new technologies and formats for presenting information from the collection in an innovative and accessible manner. Among options under consideration are:
• Affiliations with compatible libraries, both academic and general
• Partnerships with targeted search engines and web-based networks
• Production of entertaining/educational videos for presentation on E. F. Schumacher website and YouTube

5. Library Endowment
This is a fund to ensure our ability to provide ongoing maintenance of expanded library facilities and programs.

6. Schumacher Scholars Fellowship Program
Includes the creation of a fellowship through which we would provide an intensive training experience to young leaders in the field of a new economics. Through the purchase and renovation of a modest residence a short walk from the E. F. Schumacher Society's Library, we can provide free residence – while offering rich work/study opportunity and also reaping the benefits of the Fellow’s skill and labor.
