| E. F. Schumacher Society | Directions to Library and Office The street address of the E. F. Schumacher Society Office and Library building is 140 Jug End Road, South Egremont, Massachusetts. This should not be confused with our mailing address which is 140 Jug End Road, Great Barrington, Massachusetts. South Egremont is a small town on the New York State border just west of Great Barrington, approximately a two and one-half hour drive north of New York City and a three hour drive west of Boston. The nearest airport is Bradley International in Windsor Locks, Connecticut about a 75 minute drive. The Albany, New York airport is about an 80 minute drive away. Amtrak trains come to Hudson, New York, about 25 minutes by car from South Egremont. A bus from New York City's Port Authority bus terminal travels to Great Barrington twice a day. Driving directions from the Boston area: take the Massachusetts Turnpike west to the Lee, Massachusetts exit. Turn left off the ramp and then right onto Route 102 west heading towards Stockbridge. In Stockbridge turn onto Route 7 south at the Red Lion Inn. Follow Route 7 into Great Barrington. Routes 23, 41, and 7 meet on Main Street of Great Barrington. On the south side of Great Barrington turn right following Route 23 west and Route 41 south. The road winds into the village of South Egremont. At the west end of South Egremont turn left following Route 41 south towards Salisbury, Connecticut. A couple of hundred yards after this turn, take your first right onto Mt. Washington Road. There will be a pond on your right where we have sighted at different times Great Blue Heron, a single wild Swan, flocks of Canada Geese, diving Kingfishers, and many varieties of ducks. Go slow and enjoy. Travel on Mt. Washington Road for about 2 miles. If you start to climb up the mountain, you have gone too far. The first cross roads is Jug End Road. Turn left onto Jug End Road and proceed for about another mile, passing the Jug End Reservation on your right. You will come to a small incline. As it begins to level out you will see a large sign on a tree on your right announcing "E. F. Schumacher Society." The number is 140 Jug End. Proceed up the steep dirt drive. Please park in the visitor parking lot by the shed. The upper lot is reserved for residents of the site. The large building by the parking area is the Library.
